The main difference between the 1-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) course and the 2-day Full Paediatric First Aid course is the depth of training, the range of topics covered, and the level of compliance required for childcare settings.
- The 1-day course focuses on essential, life-saving skills and immediate emergency response, including CPR, choking, and how to deal with an unresponsive child. It is ideal for basic awareness training, assistants, or those in supporting roles.
- The 2-day course provides a much more in-depth qualification, covering not only emergency first aid but also the wider management of paediatric illnesses and injuries. This includes conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, fractures, burns, and anaphylaxis, alongside full practical emergency response training.
The 2-day course is also the recognised standard required for designated first aiders in Ofsted-registered childcare settings and fully meets Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements. Both courses are valid for 3 years, but the 2-day qualification is the more comprehensive option for full workplace compliance.
Completing the 2-day Paediatric First Aid Level 3 Award can support progression into a wide range of childcare, education, and care roles. It is often a mandatory requirement for positions in Ofsted-registered settings and is highly valued by employers in early years and childcare environments.
This qualification can help support roles such as nursery practitioner, childminder, teaching assistant, nanny, wraparound care assistant, and youth or sports coach. It also strengthens your CV if you are looking to enter or progress within the childcare sector, demonstrating that you are fully trained to respond to paediatric emergencies and meet recognised EYFS and Ofsted standards.
For those already working in the sector, it provides an essential step in maintaining professional competency and can support progression into more senior or designated safeguarding and first aid responsibilities.
