Functional Skills Level 2 English is a nationally recognised qualification that develops practical communication skills for work, further study, and everyday life. It is widely accepted by employers, colleges, universities, and apprenticeship providers across England and is often used as an alternative to GCSE English for entry requirements.
The qualification focuses on the real-world application of English skills, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and communicating effectively in different situations.
This programme is ideal for adults aged 19+ who want to improve their English skills, gain a recognised qualification, meet entry requirements for further study or apprenticeships, or increase their confidence communicating in everyday life and the workplace. It is suitable for both individual learners and employers looking to develop the communication skills of their workforce.
You do not need any formal qualifications to enrol. However, learners must achieve a minimum Entry Level 3.5 in an initial assessment and complete a diagnostic assessment before starting the programme. As the course is delivered through self-directed online learning, you should be comfortable studying independently and have access to a PC or laptop with a reliable internet connection.
The programme is delivered over 12 weeks through flexible online learning. Learners complete self-directed study supported by online resources, one-to-one guidance from a Functional Skills specialist and optional monthly group sessions. This flexible approach allows you to study around work, family and other commitments while still receiving structured support throughout the programme.
Learners benefit from regular feedback, progress tracking, specialist support and access to learning materials designed to help them build confidence in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
The course is delivered in cohort groups and can be purchased by individual learners or as a tailored employer cohort package.

The programme focuses on applying English skills in real-world situations, such as understanding written information, producing clear written communication, participating in discussions, and communicating effectively in professional environments.
To support successful completion of the programme, the following is included:

Learners begin with an induction meeting via MS Teams to become familiar with the programme, learning resources and expectations. Over the 12 weeks, they follow a largely self-directed learning schedule supported by one-to-one tutor guidance. Optional monthly group sessions provide additional support, feedback and opportunities to develop and consolidate learning. Mock assessments and targeted revision are included before the final assessment.

Assessment for the Level 2 Functional Skills in English qualification is completed through TQUK-accredited online assessments with remote invigilation. The qualification assesses practical English skills, including reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication.
Throughout the programme, learners receive support through practice activities, mock assessments, tutor feedback and targeted revision to help them prepare for assessment.
Exam registration is included as part of the programme, along with one free resit if required.

Once you’ve enrolled and completed payment, your place is secured, but your course may not start immediately. This is because the Level 2 Functional Skills in English is delivered in cohorts, which start every quarter (four times a year).
A cohort is a group of learners who all start the course together and move through the programme at the same pace. Each cohort is delivered virtually and includes a maximum of 30 learners, allowing for structured learning, tutor support, and group interaction.

Functional Skills Level 2 English is recognised as being broadly equivalent to a GCSE Grade 4 (formerly Grade C) in terms of level.
Many employers, apprenticeship providers, colleges, and universities accept Functional Skills Level 2 English as meeting their English entry requirements. However, learners should always check the specific requirements of the organisation or course they are applying to.
On successful completion of the programme, learners will achieve a TQUK-accredited Level 2 Functional Skills in English qualification.

The programme is delivered in virtual cohorts of up to 30 learners, providing a structured and supportive learning environment. The cost is £499 + VAT per learner, payable in two instalments: 50% at enrolment and 50% after four weeks.
