Is a career in childcare right for you?

When people think about working in a nursery, they may picture a workforce made up mostly of women. But caring for and educating young children is a professional role that people of any gender can pursue.

If you’re a man considering a career in childcare, you might be wondering what the job involves, whether you’ll fit in and how you can get started. You may be leaving school, considering a career change or already working with children and looking to develop your skills.

Whatever your starting point, Early Years could offer an opportunity to build practical skills, gain a recognised qualification and make a difference to children’s learning and development.

What does an Early Years Educator do?

Early Years Educators support babies and young children as they learn, grow and develop. The role involves much more than supervising play.

Depending on the setting and your responsibilities, your day could involve:

  • Supporting children’s communication, language and early learning.
  • Planning activities that encourage curiosity, creativity and development.
  • Reading stories, singing songs and helping children explore new interests.
  • Supporting children’s emotional wellbeing and building positive relationships.
  • Helping children develop independence through everyday routines.
  • Working with parents, carers and colleagues to support each child’s needs.
  • Following safeguarding, health and safety and inclusion procedures.

It’s a role that requires patience, communication, teamwork, observation and a genuine commitment to helping children thrive.

You don’t need to fit a particular stereotype to become an Early Years Educator. What matters is developing the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours needed to do the job well.

How can men get into childcare?

An apprenticeship can be a practical route into Early Years for people who want to learn while gaining workplace experience.

The Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprenticeship (Men in Childcare Pathway) combines training with employment in an appropriate early years setting. You’ll develop your understanding of child development, safeguarding, inclusive practice and the responsibilities of an Early Years Educator while applying your learning at work.

You earn a wage while learning, and your employer and The Childcare Company support your development throughout the programme.

You don’t necessarily need to have worked in childcare for years already, but you will need to meet the apprenticeship’s eligibility requirements and have a suitable employment arrangement.

If you’re not currently working in a nursery, The Childcare Company also offers a free apprenticeship recruitment service to help connect prospective apprentices with suitable employers.

What if you’re worried about being one of the only men?

It’s understandable to have questions about entering a profession where men are underrepresented.

You might wonder whether you’ll feel comfortable in your team, who you can turn to with questions or whether you’ll be treated differently from your colleagues.

Every nursery is different, and experiences will vary. A supportive setting should make sure that all practitioners receive appropriate training, clear guidance, fair opportunities and consistent professional expectations.

The Childcare Company has partnered with Male Childcare & Teaching Jobs to support its Men in Childcare pathway. The partnership brings a focus on mentoring, peer connection and the experiences of men working in Early Years.

This is intended to help learners build confidence, access relevant support and feel connected to a wider professional community.

Can you build a long-term career in Early Years?

Yes. Early Years can be a starting point for continued professional development and progression.

With experience and further training, you may choose to develop your skills in areas such as leadership, mentoring, inclusive practice or early years teaching.

There are different routes depending on your interests, experience and qualifications. You can explore the opportunities available and discuss your next steps with your employer and The Childcare Company.

Take your first step into childcare

You don’t have to have your whole career mapped out before you start. Learning more about the role, speaking to an employer and understanding the apprenticeship route can help you decide whether Early Years is right for you.

The Childcare Company’s Men in Childcare pathway combines professional training with a focus on the support men may need when entering a predominantly female workforce.
