Teaching Assistant Career Pathway:

A career as a Teaching Assistant can offer opportunities to develop your skills, specialise in an area you’re passionate about and take on greater responsibility within education.

Whether you’re starting as a Teaching Assistant or already have experience in the classroom, apprenticeship training can help you build your knowledge while continuing to work.

Level 3 Teaching Assistant

The Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is designed for people supporting teaching and learning in education settings.

You’ll develop practical skills and knowledge around areas such as supporting learning, communication, safeguarding, child development and professional practice.

Once you’ve developed your experience at Level 3, you may want to take your career further by specialising in a particular area.

Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant

The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is designed for experienced education support professionals who want to develop more advanced and specialist skills.

You can choose from three specialist pathways:

SEND Specialist Teaching Assistant
This pathway focuses on supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. You’ll develop your understanding of SEND, inclusive practice, assessment and strategies for supporting learners with additional needs.

Social and Emotional Wellbeing Specialist Teaching Assistant
This pathway focuses on supporting learners’ emotional wellbeing and developing inclusive approaches to behaviour, resilience and engagement. It could be particularly relevant if you work closely with pupils who need additional emotional or behavioural support.

Curriculum Provision Specialist Teaching Assistant
This pathway focuses on curriculum delivery, learning progression, assessment and adapting learning to meet different needs. It could suit Teaching Assistants who want to develop their involvement in curriculum support and classroom practice.

Where can a Specialist Teaching Assistant work?

Specialist Teaching Assistants can work across a range of educational settings, including:

  • Primary schools
  • Secondary schools
  • Special schools
  • Alternative provision
  • Pupil referral units
  • Sixth forms
  • Further education colleges

Your exact opportunities will depend on your experience, specialism and setting.

What can I progress to after Level 5?

A Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship can support progression into more senior and specialist education support roles.

Depending on your experience and chosen specialism, potential roles can include:

  • Higher Level Teaching Assistant
  • Senior Teaching Assistant
  • SEND specialist support
  • Behaviour and pastoral support
  • Curriculum support
  • Inclusion support
  • Additional learning support
  • Specialist learning support

You can also continue your professional development through further study or specialist qualifications in areas such as education, SEND or leadership.

Does a Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship make me a teacher?

No. The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship is a teaching support qualification rather than a teaching qualification.

It is designed for professionals who support teaching and learning, rather than those training to become teachers.

If your long-term goal is to become a teacher, you’ll need to explore the appropriate teacher training route for your career goals and the phase or subject you want to teach.
