Understanding DBS checks before you start your apprenticeship
If you’re starting an apprenticeship in early years, education, childcare or children and young people’s services, you may be required to complete a DBS check before you begin working in your role. For many learners, this is a standard part of the apprenticeship enrolment process and helps create safe environments for children, young people and vulnerable adults.
This guide explains what a DBS check is, why it’s needed, how the process works and what you can expect before starting your apprenticeship.
What is a DBS check?
A DBS check is a criminal record check carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It helps employers make safer recruitment decisions by identifying whether there is any information that may affect someone’s suitability to work in certain roles.
DBS checks are commonly required for apprenticeships in early years, childcare, education and children’s services, where learners may work closely with children or other vulnerable groups.
What does DBS stand for?
DBS stands for the Disclosure and Barring Service. It is a UK government organisation responsible for carrying out criminal record checks and maintaining the barred lists for people who are unsuitable to work with children or vulnerable adults.
You can find more information on the official government website:

Why do apprentices need a DBS check?
Many apprenticeships in early years, childcare, education and children’s services require a DBS check because your role may involve supporting:
- Children
- Young people
- Vulnerable adults
A DBS check helps employers provide safe, supportive environments and ensures they meet their safeguarding responsibilities.
What does a DBS check include?
Depending on your role, a DBS check may include information about:
- Criminal convictions and cautions
- Warnings or reprimands (where applicable)
- Whether you are barred from working with children or vulnerable adults
The level of DBS check required depends on your apprenticeship and job role. Most apprentices working in early years, childcare and education settings will require an Enhanced DBS check.
How do I apply for a DBS check?
In most cases, your employer will arrange your DBS check as part of your onboarding process and guide you through each stage.
You may be asked to:
- Provide proof of identity
- Complete a DBS application
- Confirm your personal details

Do I need to apply for my DBS check myself?
Usually not. Your employer will normally submit the application on your behalf and explain anything you need to do.
They’ll let you know which documents are required and support you throughout the process to make sure everything is completed correctly.
How long does a DBS check take?
Every application is different, but most DBS checks are completed within a few days to a few weeks.
Timescales can vary depending on:
- The level of DBS check required
- How quickly your identity documents are verified
- Whether additional checks are needed
Your employer will keep you updated if there are any delays.
Can I start my apprenticeship before my DBS check is complete?
This depends on your role and employer.
In some cases, you may be able to begin your apprenticeship while your DBS check is being processed. However, you may not be able to work directly with children, young people or vulnerable adults until your DBS clearance has been received.
Your employer and The Childcare Company will advise you on what applies to your apprenticeship.
What happens if something appears on my DBS check?
Having a criminal record does not automatically prevent you from starting an apprenticeship.
Each situation is considered individually, taking into account factors such as:
- The nature of the role
- The type of offence
- How long ago it occurred
- Your overall suitability for the position
All information is handled confidentially and assessed fairly by your employer.
Where can I find more information?
Your employer will usually manage the DBS process, but if you’d like to learn more, the government provides detailed guidance for employers and applicants:

If you’re ever unsure about any part of the process, your employer and The Childcare Company are here to support you.
