Your next step forward

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of your apprenticeship. It’s not a hurdle to fear. It’s your chance to show just how far you’ve come.

An independent assessor, from an approved End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), will guide the process. They’re impartial, which means the result is fair, objective, and based on the skills you’ve worked so hard to develop.

From Level 2 to Level 6, every apprentice in England completes an EPA. Passing it marks the moment you become a fully qualified professional in your early years field.

What it looks like

The EPA isn’t the same for everyone. It’s tailored to your apprenticeship standard. It could include:

  • A knowledge test (written or online)
  • A practical observation, showing what you do in real situations
  • A professional discussion or interview
  • A project or presentation

At Level 2 Early Year Practitioner, this might mean answering scenario-based questions and talking about how you’ve supported people. At higher levels, it could mean presenting a work-based project that demonstrates leadership and innovation.

Whatever your route, you’ll know exactly what’s expected before you start.

The flow of your EPA

Here’s how the process works, step by step:

  1. Completion of training
You’ll finish your apprenticeship programme, including your portfolio, Functional Skills (if required), and your off-the-job training hours.
  2. Internal verification
Your portfolio and evidence are checked internally to make sure everything is complete, accurate, and approved.
  3. Gateway and registration
Together with your employer and training provider, you’ll confirm you’re ready. Your documents are submitted, and the EPAO assigns your assessor.
  4. Assessment planning
A planning meeting takes place with your assessor, employer, and training provider. Here, your assessment schedule is confirmed, and any final evidence submissions are agreed.
  5. Assessment delivery
This is where you shine. You’ll complete the assessments set for your standard – such as a presentation, practical observation, professional discussion, or knowledge test – showing how far you’ve come.
  6. Results and certification
You’ll receive your results graded as Fail, Pass, Merit, or Distinction. If you pass, your official certificate is issued. If not, you’ll be supported to prepare for a resit.

Preparing for your end-point assessment with confidence

  • Know the standard: get familiar with the knowledge, skills and behaviours you’ll be assessed against.
  • Complete the essentials: functional Skills (English and maths) and any sector qualifications must be signed off.
  • Practise: mock tests, trial interviews and rehearsal projects build confidence.
  • Look after yourself: sleep well, plan ahead, and remember – you wouldn’t be put forward if you weren’t ready.

The gateway

Before your EPA, you’ll have a Gateway meeting with your employer and Development Coach.

Together you’ll confirm that:

  • Your training is complete
  • Mandatory qualifications are achieved
  • Your portfolio or project work is ready

This is the green light to move forward.

The outcome

  • Grading: Most EPAs award Pass, Merit or Distinction. A Pass confirms you’ve achieved the national standard. Higher grades celebrate outstanding performance.
  • Certification: Once you pass, your official certificate is requested and sent to your employer. It’s proof you’ve earned your apprenticeship.
  • If you need another go: You can resit or retake elements. With feedback and support from your Development Coach, many apprentices succeed the second time.
