Your apprenticeship is designed to fit around your job, but staying engaged with your learning is an important part of making progress.

There may be times when work, personal circumstances or unexpected events make things more difficult. The most important thing is to keep in touch and let us know as soon as possible.

Attending your sessions and reviews

You’ll have agreed learning activities, sessions, progress reviews and other contact with your Development Coach throughout your apprenticeship.

Please make sure you:

  • Attend your agreed sessions and reviews
  • Complete activities by the agreed deadlines
  • Keep your Aptem learning plan up to date
  • Log your off-the-job training
  • Upload evidence when requested
  • Keep in regular contact with your Development Coach

These activities help you stay on track and give your Development Coach the information they need to support your progress.

What if you need to cancel?

We understand that sometimes things happen and you may not be able to attend an agreed session.

If you need to cancel or rearrange an appointment, let your Development Coach know as soon as possible.

Where possible, give notice rather than simply missing the session.

If you repeatedly miss appointments or do not keep in contact, this can affect your progress and may lead to further action being taken.

What if you’re falling behind?

Don’t worry about asking for help.

If you’re struggling to complete your learning, meet deadlines or balance your apprenticeship with your other responsibilities, speak to your Development Coach.

We can work with you to understand what’s causing the difficulty and agree appropriate next steps.

Your progress may also be monitored using a RAG rating system. This helps us identify when a learner may need additional support or intervention.

The aim isn’t to penalise you. It’s to identify challenges early and make sure the right support is put in place.

Breaks in Learning

Sometimes a Break in Learning may be appropriate if your circumstances mean you’re temporarily unable to continue with your apprenticeship.

Breaks in Learning are subject to apprenticeship funding rules and aren’t simply an alternative to cancelling sessions or falling behind.

If you think you may need a break, speak to your Development Coach as soon as possible. They can explain your options and the process that would need to be followed.

What happens if you want to leave your apprenticeship?

If you’re thinking about withdrawing from your apprenticeship, please speak to your Development Coach before making a decision.

They’ll want to understand what’s changed and whether there is any support that could help you continue.

If withdrawing is the right option, your Development Coach will explain what happens next and make sure the appropriate process is followed.

The most important thing

If something is getting in the way of your learning, tell us. The earlier we know about a problem, the sooner we can work with you to find a solution.

Keeping in touch is one of the simplest ways you can take ownership of your apprenticeship and stay on track.
